Abstract

Patients diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) may experience depressive symptoms that affect their eating behavior and therefore the course of the disease. Our aim in this study is; To observe the effects of depression status, eating attitudes and disease management skills of DM patients admitted to our hospital on diabetes regulation.

Our study was designed as a cross-sectional research. Those who applied to our institution between 08/01/2018 - 15/02/2018; 200 patients were selected by random sampling method among diabetic patients aged 18-65, male and female, using oral anti-diabetic drugs, not using insulin and antidepressants, and with normal thyroid hormone levels. Demographic information survey, Beck depression scale, Eating attitude test, Three-factor eating question and Diabetes self-management perception scale were administered. Questionnaires and scales were filled out by face-to-face interview method.

Our study concluded that as emotional eating increases in patients with type 2 diabetes, glycemic control deteriorates. It has been observed that women have higher levels of emotional eating. Diabetes self-management and disease awareness are higher in those without depression.  The eating attitude of elderly diabetic patients is more normal than that of young people. It has been observed that the elderly have higher levels of sensitivity to hunger. It has been determined that patients with impaired eating attitudes do not consciously restrict their eating. It has been found that people who have had diabetes for less than five years have high levels of emotional eating.
