Contraceptive Use Patterns Among Women with High-Risk Fertility Behavior in Turkey: An Analysis of the 2003–2018 Turkey Demographic and Health Survey Data

Abstract

This study aims to determine the trend in the prevalence of contraceptive method use among women in Turkey who had at least one high-risk fertility behavior (under the age of 18, aged 35 and above, birth interval shorter than 24 months, or more than three total births) between 2003 and 2018. Utilizing secondary data from the 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2018 waves of the Turkey Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS), this cross-sectional study examines the usage rates of modern and traditional contraceptive methods, as well as temporal trends over the years. Findings reveal an increase in the use of modern methods during the study period; however, a substantial proportion of women in high-risk fertility categories still do not use any method. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) and male condoms were the most commonly used modern methods, while withdrawal remained the leading traditional method. The results highlight the need for family planning services to be more effective, accessible, and sustainable for this specific group of women.
