Abstract

In the 15th issue of SoSa, we welcome you with articles that, with the vibrancy of summer, focus on current topics at the intersection of health and society. Öykü Turunç and Zehra Yalçınkaya, in a context where roughly 40% of the decline in infant mortality is attributed to vaccines, examine family health workers’ knowledge–communication–support needs and question how childhood vaccine hesitancy is encountered. Dursun Yasemin Yayla Keskin and Salih Keskin track interest in online betting in Türkiye from 2022 to 2025 over time using Google Trends data. Kadir Onur Şimşek compares 2024 cancer mortality rates at the provincial level with tiers of the Socioeconomic Development Index. Under the heading “Sexuality and Taboo Conversations,” Hande Çevik emphasizes that pleasure is not a privilege but a matter of rights and justice. Aylin Leblebici Öztürk discusses the political geography of resistance in women’s photography and the determination of the “female gaze” to make all suppressed subjects visible. Tacettin İnandı and Ezgi Altunöz, drawing on the Ottawa Charter’s principle that “peace is a prerequisite for health,” conceptually address the components of peacebuilding. Oğuz Dicle looks at a city’s transformation through 1950s postcards; Bülent Kılıç examines “Renkli Peçe / Duvak (The Painted Veil)” along with John Curran’s film adaptation. In this installment of the Theses series, Ahmet Furkan Süner and Ahmet Can Bilgin compile social-science dissertations on cancer published in Türkiye. While the issue’s visual world is enriched by Nuray Özgülnar and Salih Keskin, the cover features a photograph by Fatih Balkan.
